It is best to approach conflict resolution with information well in hand. Find factual evidence to present. All parties have an opportunity to present a viewpoint. It is suggested that the parties try to view the issues from another viewpoint besides their own. The parties are encouraged to engage in conversation in an effort to come to a resolution. All conflict resolution should be voluntary. If the conflict cannot be resolved, it may be necessary to use peer mediation, which is mediation by a third, neutral party, to solve the issue.
Peer mediation is a process where students of the same age or background resolve differences between other people or small groups. Peer mediation provides a way to improve self esteem as well as critical and listening skills. Peer mediation also provides a method for students to resolve conflict in their lives.
All peer mediators need to be trained and monitored. Their skills need to be evaluated and developed in order to achieve the best possible solution. Peer mediators need to move the goal of the conflict resolution away from blame or guilt to a mutual solution that is acceptable by all.
The peer mediators meet with the parties involved and follow a prescribed set of rules in order to best facilitate a solution. The peer mediators need to guide the conversation, not provide solutions or answer to the problems. An evaluation and a follow up should follow any conflict resolution and peer mediation. |
